The Desk
Annotated Road Ledger
The pocket ledger page from the 1972 desert walk, where the Correspondent crossed out his boast of needing no one.
On the desk
In The Road That Carried Him, the Correspondent sets out across the desert carrying a narrow pocket ledger in which he hopes to record a life stripped of dependency. By the third evening, sheltering inside a county drainage culvert while night freight rumbles overhead, the ledger becomes the place where his theory gives way to gratitude.
Lines from the page
No one.The road that carried me. Foundry stamp on the concrete lip, half-read in the dark. Two quarts of cold water at the station: pumped, treated, cooled by her brother’s machine.
Margin note
Do not turn the second line into a new boast. It is simply the record of an afternoon when a proud sentence met a concrete pipe.
