Unfinished instrument
The image from our Return Papers for leadership as a temporary, corrigible tool that goes back on the shelf at the end of the hour.
Also called: rotating stewardship
Limit: A practical habit for keeping circles free of gurus, not an institutional office or sacred relic.
In our story The Unfinished Instrument, a small reading group realizes it has begun treating its regular host as an unspoken authority. To break the spell, she places the hosting instructions inside a scuffed wooden compass case with a pencil note: Calibration unfinished. Whoever holds this may correct the card.
Whenever we gather in circles, we rotate the host’s role and ask at the end of the hour what should change next time. Stewardship is a shared instrument, never a throne.
