We keep this laboratory abstract on our study shelf for a specific reason. In popular spiritual writing, it is easy to turn “magnetic helicity is conserved” into an absolute slogan and then leap to claims about personal survival after death. Ji and his colleagues measured magnetic helicity in a laboratory plasma and examined the conditions under which helicity itself decays. Even within physics, conservation laws have empirical boundaries, which reminds us to hold our metaphors with humility. See What We Leave in Motion.
