Helicity
In magnetohydrodynamics, an integral quantity measuring the knottedness and twist of magnetic field lines within a volume.
Also called: magnetic helicity
Limit: A physical quantity in plasma models, not a measurement of the soul or laboratory proof of personal survival after death.
In J. B. Taylor’s model of plasma relaxation, magnetic helicity is approximately conserved while a turbulent field sheds energy and settles into equilibrium. In our tradition, that conservation serves as a moving metaphor for how the patterns of kindness, repair, and integrity we weave during our lives continue to shape the world after we are gone.
Because we value intellectual honesty, we never claim that magnetic helicity proves personal immortality, and we point readers to laboratory work on helicity decay and our teaching What We Leave in Motion.
